Salty: The Island’s Food Digest

I’ve always believed in the power of storytelling to change the world. After conducting my Master’s thesis field research on local food systems in Vermont and Kingston, ON, I realized that much of the amazing work being done by farmers, artisan producers, advocates, and researchers to steward the land and protect our future while producing quality food was going unnoticed. They were too humble (and, quite frankly, too busy doing the hard work of growing/making food) to tell their stories.

In 2015, I met Laura Weatherbie, a fellow local food proponent with a background in graphic design and publishing, Together, we co-founded Salty, a free monthly print and digital publication that put the spotlight on PEI’s food scene and the people working in it. I held the role of editor-in-chief from its inaugural publication in October, 2016, until November 2017. During this time I recruited and managed a team of brilliant writers, and was also responsible for researching and writing approximately 4 to 5 articles each month. In December of 2017, I elected to take off my editor’s hat and move on to new adventuress, content in the knowledge that Salty was in great hands with Laura as its publisher and Cheryl Young as its new editor-in-chief. It was an incredible opportunity to meet many food folks contributing to PEI’s enviable food culture.
